Shine Dance & Performing Arts Academy

Indian DancePurbasha Banerjee received her Masters in Bharata Natyam from Kalakshetra University, India. The University was symbolic of the struggle for India’s independence; it was to culturally revive a country that was losing its identity under British rule. Kalakshetra became the first dance institute to establish a meaningful theoretical syllabus for dancers.

In 1992, Purbasha founded Nritya Academy of Indian Dances in Assam, the North-Eastern state of India. She was the recipient of the Dancer of the Year Award in 1993, and the Khajuraho Award in 1995. When she left the institute in 1999 to come to United States, there were over 60 students learning this southern Indian form. For the next ten years, she taught privately in the tradition of the guru-shishya parampara and has trained several dancers who have danced on the Vegas stage with their particular sense of grace, knowledge and adherence to the best traditions of the Kalakshetra style of Bharata Natyam.

Teaching Bollywood dances has also been a passion for Purbasha. Bollywood dance is the dance-form used in popular Indian Movies. It is a mixture of numerous styles. These styles include all of the classical dances, Indian Folk, Western popular, and Jazz.
